What are Actual Counts and Projected Values?

Actual recorded count values

Actual recorded count values reflect the actual number of adult words, conversational turns, or child vocalizations detected in the recording. These actual count values can be found in the following places:

LENA Core Reports

The actual counts for the day, hour, or 5-minute interval can be seen in any of the following LENA Core Reports viewed at the corresponding time resolution, by hovering over the dot or bar representing that value:

  • Adult Words
  • Conversational Turns
  • Child Vocalizations
  • Composite View

Note: The monthly view shows the averaged daily actual counts for all days with >10 hours of recorded data within that calendar month.

Here is an example from the Composite View with the time resolution bar set to the Daily level, showing actual recorded Child Vocalizations for 9/17/2007 by hovering over the corresponding point on the graph:

Actual counts are displayed here for any date that contains <10 hours of recording data and is therefore not eligible for projected values and percentiles.  Otherwise, only projected values are shown in the Report List, as explained below.  The type of count displayed can be determined by the value in the "Length" column for that row.

CSV export - Monthly, Daily, Hourly, or 5-Minute

The actual counts for the selected interval are shown in the columns labeled:

  • AWC.Actual
  • CTC.Actual
  • CVC.Actual

In Hourly or 5-Minute exports, the sum of each column will equal the corresponding Daily actual count.

Note:  The monthly level export shows the averaged daily actual counts for all days with >10 hours of recorded data within that calendar month.

ITS file export mined using ADEX

The actual values are available as AWC, Turn_Count, and Child_Voc_Count at the selected time resolution output via ADEX.

12-hour projected values

The 12-Hour projected values are computed for any calendar day with at least 10 hours of recording data.  They represent the interpolated values for adult words, conversational turns, and child vocalizations at the 12-hour mark for the day's recording.  All of our norms are based on 12-hour recordings, so this statistical projection allows LENA to generate percentile rankings. These projected values can be found in the following places:

LENA Core Reports

The projected counts can be seen in any of the following LENA Core Reports viewed at the daily or monthly time resolution, by hovering over the dot representing that value:

  • Adult Words
  • Conversational Turns
  • Child Vocalizations
  • Composite View

Note: The monthly view shows the averaged daily projected counts for all dates with >10 hours of recording data within that month.

Here is an example from the Composite View. Hovering over the dot for 8/13/2007 shows 1286 Conversational Turns projected for 12 hours based on a nearly 16-hour recording:

CSV export - Daily and Monthly

For any recording day at least 10 hours long, the Daily CSV shows the projected counts for each day in the columns labeled:

  • AWC.Proj
  • CTC.Proj
  • CVC.Proj

Note: These same columns in the monthly CSV export will show the averaged daily projected counts for all days within that calendar month with at least 10 hours of data.
