Reading the LENA Recorder's LCD screen
This article describes the normal modes displayed on the recorder's LCD screen.
If these modes appear to be displaying incorrectly, or if your recorder is displaying an error message, please see the troubleshooting guide.
Paused
The screen displays Paused (without numbers) when it is empty and ready for a new recording.
Important:
- Before recording, please ensure the display reads "Paused" without any numbers.
- If it reads Paused and displays numbers, the recorder already contains data and should be purged before recording the desired data.
- Why? The date of the first recorded data on the device determines the child's age for all data on the device, and therefore the speech models and algorithms applied during processing, as well as the percentiles derived from the processed file.
Recording
Screen displays Recording after the REC button is pressed and held for approximately three seconds.
Running recording time is displayed in hours, minutes, and seconds.
The screen will continue to show Recording until the memory is full.
Memory Full
The LENA Recorder will not hold any more audio data. Screen displays Memory Full after the device has recorded for 16 cumulative hours.
When the memory is full the recorder will turn off after a few minutes and the display screen will be blank.
The recorder will not be able to record more data until the current recording has been transferred to the LENA software and erased.
Paused + timestamp (HH:MM:SS)
Screen displays Paused and a time stamp (HH:MM:SS) when REC button is pressed and held for approximately four seconds during recording.
The timestamp indicates the elapsed recording time in hours, minutes, and seconds. This is the total time contained on the recorder.
If the recorder is left paused for more than 15 minutes it will turn off and the display screen will be blank. Press the Power Button to turn the recorder on again. It will be in paused mode, and you may resume recording by pressing and holding the REC button.
Note: It is not advisable to pause the LENA Recorder for long periods during the recording day—such as when a child is napping—because the recording time might total less than 10 hours and no percentile rank information will be given in the reports. (Norms are based on recordings where the device was left running during nap times.)
Audio Transfer
The LENA Recorder is connected to the computer via USB cable and the audio is being transferred to the software.
Charging
Screen displays Charging when the recorder is plugged into any power source, including a computer, and is not actively transferring data.
It is best to leave the recorder plugged into the wall charger overnight to ensure a complete charge.
Always fully recharge the recorder before every recording day.
Charged
The battery is fully charged and ready to use.
Low Battery
The battery is depleted and the recording has stopped. The recorder must be charged before you can continue recording.
Sleeping
On older LENA Recorders, this is the default mode that appears upon power-up when the recorder has no stored audio.
If the device is left sleeping for more than 15 minutes it will automatically turn off and the display screen will go blank.
Important:
- Before recording, please ensure the display reads "Sleeping" or "Paused" without any numbers.
Power Off
The recorder has been powered off by pressing the Power Button for approximately three seconds. The screen briefly displays Power Off before the screen goes blank.
Blank screen
The recorder is off. Press the Power Button to turn the device on, or connect the device to the wall charger or computer until the screen says Charged.
