Troubleshooting LENA recorder errors and symptoms

Click on your recorder's symptoms below for information on what you can to to try to resolve the problem.

Expand or collapse content Error 09 Set Clock

Often this error can be resolved by connecting the recorder to the LENA Pro software.  Here’s what to do:

  1. Charge the recorder for 15-30 minutes, on a charging station that is plugged into the wall. We need to make sure the battery has enough charge for the next steps.
  2. Connect the recorder to LENA, as if you were going to transfer a recording. Transfer, erase, or acknowledge the empty recorder message, as appropriate.
  3. Disconnect the empty recorder and check its screen.

If the Error 09 is gone, the software has reset the clock, and the recorder is ready to use.

If the Error 09 persists…

  1. Close LENA.
  2. Temporarily change the time on your LENA computer by 30 minutes. (We’re trying to trigger a clock reset by ensuring a big mismatch in times.)  Do this in Control Panel, under “Clock, Language, and Region,” in the Date and Time section.
  3. Launch LENA and connect the recorder again, as above.
  4. When LENA tells you to disconnect, or that the recorder does not contain data, disconnect it.
  5. If the Error 09 is gone, reset the computer clock to the right time and connect the recorder again to correct its clock.
Expand or collapse content Error 04

First try a recorder reset. Press both the power and record buttons at the same time, and hold for 10-15 seconds. (Resetting does not affect any data that is on the device.)

If the Error 04 persists, try connecting to the LENA software to reset its internal clock

  1. Connect the recorder to the LENA software, as if you were going to transfer a recording. Transfer, erase, or acknowledge the empty recorder message, as appropriate.
  2. Disconnect the empty recorder and check its screen.

If the Error 04 is gone, the software has reset the recorder's clock, and the recorder is ready to use.

If the Error 04 persists, then either the software did not try to correct the clock because it was not "wrong enough," or the error cannot be resolved. To rule out the former:

  1. Close LENA.
  2. Temporarily change the time on your LENA Pro computer by 30 minutes. (We’re ensuring a big mismatch to trigger the clock reset.)  Do this in Control Panel, under “Clock, Language, and Region,” in the Date and Time section.
  3. Launch LENA and connect the recorder again, as above.
  4. When LENA tells you to disconnect, or that the recorder does not contain data, disconnect it.
  5. If the Error 04 is gone, reset the computer clock to the right time and connect the recorder again to correct its clock or else the next recording will have an incorrect start time.

For Error 02, Error 03, Error 05, Error 06, power the recorder off and on a few times.

If the error message persists, try resetting the recorder like this: press both the power and record buttons at the same time, and hold for 10-15 seconds. (Resetting does not affect any data that is on the device.)

Expand or collapse content Recorder is unresponsive - screen is blank, or blank unless plugged in to power
  1. Make sure there is some charge in the device (plug in for at least 15 min).
  2. Reset the recorder.  Press both the power and record buttons at the same time, and hold for 10-15 seconds.

If the problem persists, hold down only the Power button for 10 seconds.

Expand or collapse content Recorder doesn't seem to take on any charge when plugged in, or doesn't hold a charge

Try a different charger, a different cable, and a different charging location.

Expand or collapse content Recorder spontaneously stops recording before 16 hours

This is uncommon.

If a participant/family reports this behavior, give them a different device for their next recording, and test the device. Unassign the recorder and start a recording that you can later delete.

  • You can shake it or tap it gently a few times to see if it freezes; otherwise you can leave it running in a drawer.
  • The goal is to see if it reaches Memory Full, so the sound you record does not matter.

If you observe that the screen message spontaneously stops recording before 16 hours, contact LENA Support. Otherwise the recorder is fine to use.

If a family reports this behavior on more than one device, you may need to discuss with them any barriers to recording.

Expand or collapse content Pressing the RECORD button does not start a recording

Be sure you're holding the button continuously for 3-4 seconds.

Expand or collapse content Screen is stuck on "v1.3" or something similar - doesn't go to Paused or Memory Full

This recorder is stuck in its startup sequence.

  1. Try to turn it off by holding down the power button.
  2. If it does not respond, try holding down both buttons for 10-15 seconds.
  3. If it still does not respond, set it aside to let the battery die. This may take a 1-2 days depending on the current charge level. The screen will go blank.
  4. After the screen goes blank, charge the device for at least 15 minutes, and then disconnect it from power to see what the screen says.
  5. If you now see Error 09, follow the Error 09 instructions. Otherwise, the device is fine to use - just be sure you complete the charge before sending out for another recording.
Expand or collapse content Recorder's screen says Charging or Charged even though it is not plugged in

We'd like to say we have developed a new "air charge" method, but actually your device is stuck in the wrong mode. To resolve:

  2. If it does not respond, try holding down both buttons for 10-15 seconds.

  5. If you now see Error 09, follow the Error 09 instructions. Otherwise, the device is fine to use - just be sure you complete the charge before sending out for another recording.
Expand or collapse content Recorder won't power off

Try to reset the device (press both buttons and hold for 10-15 seconds).

Then power it back on and see if it will power off normally, using the button and after 5-15 minutes of idle time.

  1. Try to turn it off by holding down the power button.
  2. If it does not respond, try holding down both buttons for 10-15 seconds.
