All about LENA Pro file types and file names
The file types described here are unique to the LENA system.
LENA Pro can be used to export other familiar file types for use with other applications.
Note: The information in this article reflects LENA Pro only. Available file types, retention, storage, access, and export details may differ in other LENA products.
UPL: the "uploaded" file
The UPL is the file that results when you "upload" (transfer) raw audio data from a LENA recorder to your LENA Pro software. LENA algorithms are applied to the contents of this file in order to generate quantitative data about the acoustic stream.
The UPL file contains the compressed audio data, but it cannot be recognized or read by standard audio playback software. LENA Pro software is required to extract the compressed audio into a standard .wav format.
The UPL may be retained or deleted in LENA Pro, according to user preference.
- Deletion of the UPL does not affect the availability of quantitative data and feedback reports.
- Deletion of the UPL does preclude playback of 5-minute clips within LENA as well as any .wav file export.
A full 16-hour UPL requires ~1/2 GB (500 MB) storage space on LENA Pro computer's internal hard drive.
UPL file naming convention
The UPL file name represents the date and time of the upload and the serial number of the recorder the data came from.
File names follow this format: YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS_[RecS/N]
Example:
- 20160708_134239_008114.upl
- This file was uploaded from the recorder on 8 July 2016, at 1:42:39 p.m., from LENA recorder #8114
ITS: the "Interpreted Time Segment" file
The ITS file is a text file in XML format that contains a compilation of the algorithmic analyses of the original audio file.
It is created as a final output from the LENA software after the software has analyzed a given audio file.
The LENA software then uses this file in order to create user-friendly graphs and charts.
Each ITS file provides the following:
- Segmentation information of the audio file
- Identification of speakers and characteristics in audio segments: Adult Male, Adult Female, Key Child, Other Children, Television and Electronic Sounds, Overlapping Sounds, Distant Sounds, Noise, and Silence
- Identification of vocal interactions: beginnings and endings of vocal interactions between speakers, intermediate pauses that occur between vocal interactions, speakers involved in vocal interactions—the initiators and responders
- Identification of conversational turns: vocal exchanges between an adult and the key child
- Analysis of background sounds, including noise, silence, TV, radio, any electronic and recorded sounds, distant speech, and overlapping sounds
- Header information from the audio file, including audio characteristics and the beginning, end, and paused segments that occur in the time span of an audio file
- Summary and description of the key child (e.g., child’s gender and age)
- Time stamping: Information in each ITS file is time stamped at the centisecond (1/100th) level
You can read more detail about the ITS file creation and contents in the LENA Technical Report 4.
Use ADEX to mine one or more ITS files for specific types of data to be re-exported in a .csv file, which is then readable in Excel, SPSS, R, and other readily available applications.
Users with programming knowledge may also work with the ITS file directly.
ITS file naming convention
The exported ITS file name matches the name of the corresponding UPL file, as described above, and is prepended with an "e" for "exported."
LDT: the LENA Developmental Table file
LENA Development Table (LDT) files in LENA Pro contain a compilation of Developmental Snapshot data, AVA data, and recording information relevant to the child(ren) and date(s) selected during export.
These files are saved as XML-formatted, plain text files in a folder specified at the time of export.
The following information is contained in the LDT file:
- Recording information
- Child age at recording time
- Date of recording
- AVA standard score
- AVA average score
- Developmental Snapshot information
- Child ID
- Enrollment date
- Child Key number
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Group ID
- Answers from selected snapshot(s)
The LDT file is used in conjunction with the LENA ADEX tool.
LDT file naming convention
The exported LDT file is named according to the participant's unique "child key," and this is not editable during export.
Note that subsequent exports for the same child to the same location will overwrite existing exports.
