Export one or many .its files for data analysis

The .its ("Interpreted Time Segment") file contains metadata of recordings processed by the LENA Pro software. You can use ADEX or an .xml editor to analyze these files.

In addition to Adult Words, Conversational Turns, and Child Vocalizations, the .its file also contains speaker durations, notes of speech sounds vs. non-speech sounds, and more.

ITS file export is available for active children only.

This article explains how to manually select and export one or more .its files.  Alternatively, you may choose to enable automatic export of the .its file for every .upl LENA processes.

1. Open the Export Data dialog.

From any LENA report, click on the export icon.

Open the Export Data dialog.

2. Select the desired individual(s) from the Child List.

LENA will always export one .its file for each recording file within the period selected, for each child selected.  Therefore, a few of the selection areas are not meaningful for the ITS export.

  • Report Elements time interval selection is irrelevant for this export - you may break the data out by intervals later usng ADEX.  However, selecting "Daily" under Report Elements is helpful for cross-checking the available reports.
  • Reports selection is also irrelevant to the ITS export.
  • Automatic export is different - you may read about it here.

2.1. To select a single child, highlight that child's name.

To select a single child, highlight that child's name.

2.2. To select multiple children you can do any of the following:

  • Ctrl+click to select specific children from throughout the list (click one child, then press and hold the Ctrl key while clicking additional children)
  • Shift+click to select a group of consecutive children (click the first child, press and hold the Shift key, then click the last item)
  • Use the Select All button to select all children in the list
  • Prefilter by Group, and then use any of the above methods to select some or all children from the Group

See examples below.

3. Select the Report Date(s) of interest.

You can select All Dates, Latest Report Date, or a custom date range.

Note:  When multiple children are selected, the Latest Report Date option does not pull the latest report for each selected individual.  It identifies the most recent report date from among the children selected, and pulls files from that date.  So, if the selected children all recorded most recently on the same date, you will pull all of their files from that date.  However, if one child among those selected has a processed recording from a more recent date than the others, only that .its file will be exported.

Look closely at the Report Elements column to verify that you are pulling the data you want.

.its file naming convention

LENA will automatically name each exported file in the following way:

Example: e20140320_153436_004344.its

  • e = exported from LENA
  • Date in YYYYMMDD format indicates the date a file was uploaded to LENA (March 20, 2014 in this example)
