What information does LENA Pro provide?

1. Reports.

The LENA Pro feedback reports display quantitative data about the child's natural language environment on a given recording day.  These reports were originally designed as feedback to parents and professionals about a child's exposure to words spoken by adults, engagement in vocal turntaking with adults, and exposure to TV and electronic sounds on a normal day.

  • Core reports quantify the child's language environment, including Adult Words, Conversational Turns, Child Vocalizations, and a breakdown of categories of sound exposure in the Audio Environment.
  • Percentile information, based on the LENA Natural Language Study of children ages 2 months to 48 months, is displayed for any recording over 10 hours long.
  • Data are presented in tabular format and as graphs that can be viewed in monthly, daily, hourly, or 5-minute time intervals.
  • All core report data can also be exported for further analysis in SPSS, SAS, or Microsoft Excel at the monthly, daily, hourly, or 5-minute level.

2. Assessments.

Automatic Vocalization Assessment

  • An estimate of the child's expressive language development based on the recording data
  • Results are presented in tabular and graphical format

Developmental Snapshot

  • A validated 52-item parent report questionnaire that provides an estimate of a child's developmental age with respect to receptive and expressive language skills
  • Results are presented in tabular and graphical format

3. Options for further audio analysis.

  • In-application access to the audio and visualization of the waveform in 5-minute sections.  Sections can be marked, annotated, and exported.
  • The .wav file for the entire recording can be exported for further analysis in Praat, Audacity, Waverunner, or the software of your choice.
  • Pre-segmented and labeled .trs or .cha files can be exported for transcription or other analysis using Transcriber, ELAN, CLAN, or SALT.

4. Options for data mining.

  • The Interpreted Time Segments (ITS) file is a compilation of the algorithmic analyses of the original audio file and can be exported for further analysis and data mining using the companion Advanced Data Extractor software (ADEX).
