What is LENA?

LENA stands for Language ENvironment Analysis.

The LENA System is a recording and audio analysis package that enables researchers and intervention providers to easily collect, process, and analyze natural language environment data.

LENA was originally designed to provide caregiver feedback to boost the amount of language exposure for children ages 2 months to 48 months.  Our customers are creative, and the system is now used world-wide for a variety of applications.

Physically, the LENA System comprises a lightweight digital recorder, acoustically designed LENA clothing to properly position the recorder, and software.  The software processes and analyzes up to 16 hours of audio data recorded in a child's natural environment using advanced algorithms and statistical modeling.  The resulting counts, percentiles, scores, and more are then available to be used for caregiver feedback and/or for further analysis.

For children age 2 to 36 months, the software also includes the Developmental Snapshot - a fully validated 52-item caregiver questionnaire designed to quickly estimate a child's developmental age with respect to receptive and expressive language skills.
