Export a TRS (+.wav) or CHA (+.wav) File

The TRS export is a .trs file for use with Transcriber software.  Transcriber version 1.5.1 is recommended.  The .trs file can also be imported into ELAN software.

The CHA export is a .cha file for use with CLAN software.  It can also be imported into SALT software.

Exporting the TRS or CHA* automatically exports the full companion .wav file.  The .wav can be accessed independently of Transcriber or CLAN using a variety of applications, including Praat, Wavesurfer, and Audacity.  You can use ADEX to correlate LENA clock time to elapsed time in the recording.

For storage planning purposes, a .wav file for a full 16-hour recording is almost 2 GB in size.

Exports can be stored to the location of your choice and are then independent of the LENA software.

*There is a bug in the WAV extraction via CHA export. The WAV is prepended with 125 ms of noise. We recommend accessing the WAV via the TRS export.

1. Click the Excel icon at the bottom left of any LENA report screen to access the Export window.

Click the Excel icon at the bottom left of any LENA report screen to access the Export window.

Tip:  You can access the Export button from any report, but Report List (shown here) is a good choice if you will be exporting a single file.  Highlight that file in Report List view before clicking the export window to preselect the child and file in the next step.

  • Note:  If the uploaded file contained recordings from two or more days, you will see the same filename repeated, once per recording date, in the "Filename" column on the far right.  Be sure to highlight the first instance of that filename, even if the part of the file you'll work with occurred on a later date.  Why?  LENA looks for the file according to the first recording date it contains.

2. Make export selections.

LENA will always export one .trs file plus one .wav file for each recording within the period selected, from each child selected.  There is no filtering by time interval, and no need to select Report type.

  1. Highlight the child(ren) whose .trs or .cha plus .wav file(s) you wish to export.
  2. Select the recording dates of interest.

3. Click the TRS (or CHA) button to initiate the export.

Click the TRS (or CHA) button to initiate the export.

4. Save to a convenient location of your choice.

Both the .trs/.cha and the .wav will be saved to the same folder.  LENA names the exported files to match the .upl filename. Later, Transcriber software will find the .wav file by this filename.

Save to a convenient location of your choice.

5. To open the .trs file, double click on the file in the folder where you've saved it.

Doing so will launch the Transcriber software (if installed!) and load the .trs file with the accompanying .wav file that will have been exported to the same location.

Be aware that opening a .trs file for a full recording can take 10-20 minutes.

Notes:

  • If you make changes to the Transcriber file, please save under a new filename to prevent your work being overwritten by a subsequent export of the same file.
  • If you rename by appending the filename rather than changing it completely, you'll still be able to correlate it back to the original LENA file - e.g., "e20060623_111219_000665_coded.trs" still clearly references the original 20060623_111219_000665.upl and the 20060623_111219_000665.its for use with ADEX.
  • If you edit the filename of the .trs file, you must make the same changes to the .wav filename (and vice versa) for Transcriber to be able to locate and automatically open the matching audio file.
