Child Vocalizations Report
The Child Vocalizations Report provides an estimate of the number of continuous speech-related segments produced by the key child.
- A child vocalization is vocal output that is
- attributed to the key child (i.e., is within a CHN segment)
- identified as speech-related (e.g., phrase, word, babble, coo, protophone)
- preceded and followed by at least 0.3 seconds of silence or other sound that is not child speech
- Non-speech sounds from the vocal tract are excluded from the child vocalization count. These include including vegetative sounds (e.g., burping, sneezing, and breathing), and fixed signals (e.g., crying and laughing).
- This report does not identify the number of words per vocalization, only how many continuous vocalizations occurred.
- Please refer to our Technical Reports for more information on the development of this and other LENA system measures.
Orientation to the Child Vocalizations report.
The software plots child vocalizations on a chart for easy viewing. The vertical axis represents the total number of child vocalizations per time interval. The horizontal axis displays the interval for which data exist.
The Child Vocalizations report contains all of the following features described elsewhere in this chapter:
- drop-down child list for easy navigation among children
- time interval selector to control the viewing resolution
- date selector bar (scroll bar and drop-down calendar) to select the date and/or time of interest
- audio clip playback and export options at the 5-minute level
- print report button
- export data button
- report navigation buttons for easy navigation among one child's reports
Child Vocalizations data are displayed as follows:
Actual count per day, plus projected 12-hour count and percentile for any recording day over 10 hours long.
Any green dot represents the 12-hour projected count.
Percentile and projected values will read N/A for recordings less than 10 hours long, and the corresponding dot will be gray.
Averaged actual counts per month, plus averaged projected 12-hour counts and percentiles if applicable.
These data are from the family of child with a known developmental delay. They completed recordings but did not receive LENA feedback. We wish they had!
