Help! My LENA Pro computer is running out of storage space
LENA Pro is designed to store its data on an internally mounted, fixed drive only. The default location is C:\ProgramData\LENA. When storage space becomes an issue, choose one of the options below.
Always have a current and complete LENA data directory backup before you make any changes!
Move the LENA Pro license and data to a computer with a larger hard drive.

Follow these steps to prepare.
Replace the C:\ drive with a larger one, and move the data in.

Add a second, larger, internally mounted, fixed hard drive.
Internally mounted and fixed are the key terms here.
- LENA won't store data to an external drive under normal circumstances. If you manage to circumvent that and Windows swaps drive letters (as it sometimes does), LENA will be suddenly unable to access the data.
You will need to uninstall LENA and then reinstall in order to customize data storage to that new drive, instead of to the default C:\ location.
Make note of your product key before uninstalling.

Delete any audio files (.upl files) that you don't need to keep within the LENA data directory.
The really large files in the LENA data directory are the .upl files - the compressed audio - at 0.5 GB per 16-hour recording.
You must keep the .upl files if you want the option to:
- play back or export audio clips from the 5-minute view
- export the full .wav file for use with other playback software
- reprocess a file that you discover was misassigned or processed with the wrong DOB
If you do not need the audio or have already exported what you will need, then the following options can free up significant space:
- use the Settings screen and Storage tab to delete all .upl files for some or all of the children, or
- selectively delete .upl files
Use Move Audio to bulk move all current audio files to a second internally mounted, fixed hard drive.
This option is recommended with reservations because we have seen it not work (reasons unclear), and it complicates things if the software needs to be moved to a new computer in the future. Reuniting the data for a move is a bit tedious, but more to the point someone has to remember that the audio is not in the normal location before moving the license and data!
If you do choose this option:
- This second internal drive could be modestly sized, as long as it is large enough to hold all current audio.
- All of the current .upl files will be moved - you can't pick and choose.
- Going forward, LENA will continue to store new data to the location originally chosen during installation...meaning you'll have .upl files in both locations.
The Move Audio feature is located on the Storage tab of the Settings screen.
Switch to an online version of LENA.
