What is the LENA Developmental Snapshot?

The LENA Developmental Snapshot is a 52-item caregiver questionnaire designed to estimate combined receptive and expressive language development.  The items comprise age-appropriate skills for children 2 months to 36 months of age.  Parents may complete the Developmental Snapshot on paper for later electronic entry, or responses may be entered directly into the software during a parent interview.  Detailed instructions for determining the best answer to each question are located in the left hand sidebar of the Developmental Snapshot screen, and on the front sheet of the printed form.

Responses are automatically tabulated by the LENA software, yielding the following scores displayed in both graphic and tabular formats:

  • Developmental Age
  • Standard Score
  • Percentile

The Snapshot can be used for older children with known or suspected developmental delays to estimate developmental age, aid in treatment planning, and track changes in developmental age over time; however, standard scores and percentiles are calculated for children up to 36 months of age only.

This resource was designed by LENA Research Foundation scientists and speech language pathologists and has been tested and validated.  For more information on the development and validation of LENA Developmental Snapshot please see Technical Report 7, “The LENA Developmental Snapshot.”
